🚴 Weekly Cycling Content: Guided Rides & Fitness Tips — Week of 25 Sept 2026
Welcome to this week's DK Personal Trainer cycling content! Whether you're clipping in for the first time or chasing new PRs, we've got everything you need — from scenic guided ride routes to targeted fitness tips that will transform your performance in the saddle. 🚴
🗺️ This Week's Featured Guided Ride: The Wiltshire Countryside Loop
This week we're spotlighting one of our favourite local routes — a stunning 30-mile loop through the Wiltshire countryside, starting and finishing in Salisbury. Perfect for intermediate riders looking for a mix of rolling hills, quiet country lanes, and breathtaking open landscapes.
Route Highlights
📍 Start/Finish: Salisbury City Centre
📏 Distance: 30 miles (approx. 48 km)
⛰️ Elevation Gain: 450m — a satisfying challenge without being brutal
⏱️ Estimated Time: 1h 45m – 2h 30m depending on pace
☕ Café Stop: The Old Bakehouse in Winterslow — a DK favourite!
What to Expect on the Ride
The first 10 miles are mostly flat, ideal for warming up and settling into your rhythm. Miles 10–20 feature the main climbs — a steady ascent near Pitton that will test your legs, but the panoramic views at the top are absolutely worth it. The final stretch back into Salisbury is a satisfying downhill run with wide, well-maintained roads.
💡 Pro Tips for This Route
Fuel early: Eat a light snack or energy bar before the climb at mile 10 — don't wait until you're hungry.
Gear down in advance: Shift to an easier gear before you hit the incline, not during it.
Ride in a group: Not only is it more fun, but drafting can save up to 30% of your energy expenditure.
Check your tyre pressure before you leave — the most overlooked pre-ride step!
"The best rides aren't always the fastest — they're the ones where you finish with a smile on your face and stories to tell." — Darren, DK Personal Trainer

🏋️ Cycling Fitness Corner: Build Power, Endurance & Speed
Riding more miles is great, but smart off-bike training is what truly elevates your cycling performance. Here are three key fitness pillars every cyclist should focus on this week:
1. Leg Strength: The Foundation of Every Pedal Stroke
Strong legs mean more power output with less fatigue. Add these exercises to your weekly routine:
Bulgarian Split Squats — 3 sets of 10 each leg. Targets glutes, quads, and improves single-leg stability.
Romanian Deadlifts — 3 sets of 12. Builds hamstring and glute strength for powerful climbs.
Box Step-Ups with Knee Drive — 3 sets of 10 each leg. Mimics the cycling pedal motion and improves hip flexor strength.
2. Core Stability: Ride Longer, Ride Stronger
A strong core keeps you stable in the saddle, reduces back pain, and allows you to transfer more power to the pedals. Try this 10-minute core circuit 3x per week:
Plank Hold — 3 x 45 seconds
Dead Bug — 3 x 12 reps (slow and controlled)
Glute Bridges — 3 x 15 reps (pause at the top)
Bird-Dog — 3 x 10 each side
3. Interval Training: Boost Your Aerobic Engine
If you want to ride faster without riding more miles, interval training is your secret weapon. Try this simple session on your next ride:
Warm up at easy pace — 10 minutes
Hard effort (90% max effort) — 1 minute
Easy recovery spin — 2 minutes
Repeat 6–8 times
Cool down at easy pace — 10 minutes
🍌 Quick Nutrition Tip of the Week
For rides over 60 minutes, aim to consume 30–60g of carbohydrates per hour. Bananas, energy gels, or homemade rice cakes are all excellent options. Staying fuelled prevents the dreaded 'bonk' (hitting the wall) and keeps your power output consistent to the finish line.
